About Ayurveda
The art of bringing the body back into its natural equilibrium through the correct response to our environment through the senses.
Ayurveda is a 5,000 year old science of life and healing originating from India. The ayurvedic lens views the body and mind as a microcosm of our environment and intimately connected to its rhythms. By understanding these rhythms and adjusting our routine so we work with nature, our body and mind can function optimally.
It uses the 5 elements: earth, water, fire, air and space as a framework for understanding both the environment and the body/mind functions and expressions. The 5 elements are further refined into 3 governing principles called doshas: Kapha dosha, earth + water, is associated with the musculoskeletal system and lubrication. Pitta, fire, is associated with our metabolism and all biochemical changes and Vata, air + space, is associated with the nervous system and movement within the body. We are comprised of all 3 doshas, but the proportion and expression of each is unique to the individual and is referred to as our constitution. Understanding our constitution gives us insight into how to stay healthy and balanced. It is like any act of balancing; It is dynamic and we are constantly shifting and responding to the energy around us. As we improve at this, this movement becomes more subtle and we can notice small imbalances before they grow into stubborn diseases.
Ayurveda, then, is the art of bringing the body back into its natural equilibrium through the correct response to our environment through the senses. We use specific practices in: diet, lifestyle, herbs, yoga, breathing techniques, meditation, bodywork and cleansing to get in sync with our true nature. Ultimately, this state of health brings out our potential, allowing us to live more fully, with deep contentment and happiness.
